Calypso Uh Oh

Today is hot. That's just all there is to it. So on a day when the thermostat is hovering near the triple-digits, all I could think of wanting for lunch was something cool and refreshing. Three failed attempts and 45 min. spent wrestling with Hillsboro Rd. traffic, I finally made my way cautiously back to Berry Hill to the office.

Shining like a beacon at the end of the road with empty parking spots and a line contained inside in the building was Couva Calypso Cafe. Perfect, I thought! I rushed in, jumped to the front of the "to-go order" line, and ordered the first thing that jumped off the page at me. Black Bean Salad. Ok, salad. Yep, sounds perfect.

When I finally returned to my desk, where I now sit trying to type, email, and eat, I find in front of me nothing more than glorified nachos. Yes the lettuce is fresh, but it's warm now that it's had black beans, coconut rice, and melted cheese atop it for a good 10 minutes. And all this heat and humidity has really turned the chips stale. Instead of adding a bite of crunch or assisting with the proper salad scooping action, they're just dead, stale weight in the middle of my meal.

Now, don't get me wrong. If I'd been in the mood for nachos, this would have been the perfect option. The ingredients are bright and fresh, and the entire dish is nice and colorful. It just wasn't what I thought I'd be getting. I also really wanted one of those coconut corn muffins...

I will say, though, the iced tea is some of the freshest and most refreshing I've tasted in weeks. Even unsweetened it made all that trafficky nonsense worthwhile.

So maybe I'll try again for a better lunch tomorrow. Or then again, maybe I won't. A girl can only handle so much lunch-hour stress. Shouldn't it be a break in the middle of the day?
